Juste Debout. C'est magnifique! As a bboy, I always went to bboy jams. This is my first time going to an all styles dance event. I found it to be raw. I hear this over and over that most dancers criticize bboys because they focus more on the moves than the movement itself. I agree with this 100%. Many don't know how to express themselves and use the moves they learned as an outlet for their character. Juste Debout pretty much summed up that statement.
As I was going through the door, I was about to regret my decision to purchase ticket. The admission to the jam was $40. Add a camera in the bag and it was $50 for me. Usually jams like this is about $20-30. However, as I watched the diversity of different street styles manifest itself onto the dance floor, I realize it was definitely worth it.
Taking pictures of the event wasn't exactly easy. The lighting was either too dark or too bright with sploches of red and blue from the ceiling strobes. Too much under and overexposure. It was also so packed that it took me about 30 minutes to find a good spot to roost and snap away. The dancers, with hope to impress the judges, usually faced their direction. Of course I was standing in the opposite direction. So that made it difficult to capture facial expressions. Some days you have the best case scenario. Other days, you work with what you got. Regardless, as a photographer, it's my job to make sure everything turns out amazing.
Here's some shots from the event. More pictures are on my facebook page. As I am currently posting this...the event is still happening! It's a bummer I had to leave early but if you have plans, you got to stick to them.
